Sticker Book Won’t Close or Stickers Fall Off? What to Check

If your child’s sticker book won’t close, start by checking how much is in it and whether stickers are stacking up against each other. If stickers keep falling off, check whether they work well with the pages they’re stuck on. These are two separate problems, and looking at them one at a time makes it easier to choose the right fix.

By “sticker book,” we mean a sticker album or binder with pages designed for sticking stickers on and peeling them off again. This guide covers what to check for each problem, what to read on the label before buying new pages, and how to choose a way to store stickers. It draws on information from a sheet manufacturer and on independent reviews, but results can differ depending on the exact combination of products you use.

For an overview of Bonbon Drop stickers themselves, a puffy sticker series that has been especially popular in Japan, see the article below. Here, we focus on the everyday problems that come up after purchase: sticking, storing, and peeling.

  • Common Questions About Sticker Books and Puffy Stickers

First, Identify the Problem: Won’t Close, Falling Off, or Damaged

When a Japanese Q&A site for kids asked children to share common experiences with sticker books, many familiar complaints came in. The book gets too thick to close, stickers fall off without anyone noticing, and the adhesive layer comes away when a sticker is removed.
(Source: “Tell me your sticker book relatable moments!” (in Japanese) | Nifty Kids)

Any of these can happen, but each problem calls for different checks.

What you’re seeing What to check first
The book bulges or the closure won’t reach The number of pages, whether both sides are used, and whether stickers overlap
Stickers come loose on their own or fall out when the book is opened The page material and which side is meant for use, the type of sticker, and how long it has been stuck there
Stickers or pages get damaged when you try to peel stickers off The cautions on the page packaging, and how stiff or thin the stickers are

The “what to check” column doesn’t pinpoint a single cause. Use it as a starting point to narrow down the possibilities.

The Book Bulges or the Closure Won’t Reach

If the book won’t close, look at how much is in it and how the stickers sit before worrying about whether the stickers suit the pages.

  • How many pages are in the book
  • Whether stickers are on one side of each page or both
  • Whether puffy stickers on facing pages are pressing against each other

Don’t force the book shut. If it only closes when you press down hard, it’s too full. Keeping it squeezed shut may put strain on the stickers and the cover, so try removing some pages or storing part of the collection separately.

Stickers Come Loose on Their Own or Fall Out When the Book Is Opened

If sticker edges lift when no one has touched them, or stickers are lying loose when you open the book, check whether the stickers work well with the pages.

Many sticker books use release sheets: pages designed to hold stickers and let you peel them off again. NEION Film Coatings Corp., a Japanese manufacturer of release sheets, explains that for puffy stickers and similar types, how well a sticker works with a sheet depends on the sticker’s type, thickness, and material. For that reason, the company does not make one blanket recommendation.

Stickers or Pages Get Damaged When You Try to Peel Stickers Off

Holding a sticker in place and letting you remove it without damage are two different things, so check each one separately.

One review tested a sticker book with polypropylene-coated (PP-coated) pages from Seria, a Japanese 100-yen shop chain (similar to a dollar store). The cautions on the packaging warned that thin stickers might become impossible to remove. In the review, a thin paper sticker tore when the reviewer tried to peel it off.

That result applies to one particular product and particular stickers. Even so, it shows why it helps to read the cautions on a sticker book or its pages before using it.

What to Check Before Choosing Release Sheets

Before buying new release sheets or switching to a different kind, check both the label and how your child plans to use them, rather than deciding by material alone.

Don’t Judge by Material Alone

Try not to assume that “clear PET film will be fine” or that “paper sheets are more likely to let stickers fall off.” As mentioned above, the sheet manufacturer itself says that how well a sheet works with puffy stickers varies from sticker to sticker.

The company suggests trying its sheets first with flat stickers or with individually cut stickers, often sold as “flake stickers.” It does not broadly guarantee that its sheets suit puffy stickers.

Check Which Side to Use and Read the Instructions

Some release sheets are designed to be used on a specific side, front or back. Some labels also list sticker types that aren’t suitable. Check the instructions and cautions on the packaging before you start sticking.

Check “Does It Hold?” and “Does It Peel Cleanly?” Separately

When choosing release sheets, check these two points separately:

  • Do stickers stay put without lifting or falling off?
  • When your child wants to remove a sticker, does it come off without stretching or tearing, and without leaving marks on the sheet?

If the stickers are mainly for looking at, the first point matters most. If your child likes to move stickers around, the second point matters just as much.

Test New Sheets with a Few Stickers First

Before moving a whole collection onto new sheets, you can stick on just a few stickers, leave them for a while, and then check how they look. If you also want to test how easily they come off, use stickers your child won’t mind losing.

Even if everything looks fine after a few days, the same may not be true after longer periods in storage. Conditions such as the temperature where the book is kept may also make a difference, so check on it from time to time.

If the Book Won’t Close, Reduce Bulk and Review the Layout

If the sticker book won’t close, take stock of what’s inside before buying a bigger binder, and see whether anything can come out.

Count the Pages and See How Stickers Are Placed

Counting the pages, and noting whether stickers are on one side or both, makes it easier to see where the extra thickness is coming from.

Placing puffy stickers so they don’t overlap with stickers on the facing page may help reduce the thickness. How much difference it makes, though, depends on the book and the stickers.

Check the Closure and the Cover

Check whether the closure fastens without pressing the book down hard, and whether the cover is lifting. For sticker binders with rings, also check whether the rings have become hard to close and whether the holes in the pages are getting damaged.

Divide the Collection Between Two Books or Keep Stickers on Their Original Backing Sheets

One option is to divide the collection between two books. Another is to leave stickers your child won’t be moving any time soon on their original backing sheets and store them separately.

For folders with clear pockets that hold sticker sheets whole, one review reported that slightly puffy stickers still fit.
(Source: Review of two Seria sticker books (in Japanese) | Kufu Tokubai News)

That review doesn’t tell us whether thicker stickers in general would fit. Try it while keeping an eye on how much you put in and how thick the stickers are.

Choose Storage Based on How Your Child Uses Stickers

A child who enjoys moving stickers around needs something different from a child who wants to keep them safe to look at. Instead of aiming to fit everything into one book, start from how your child likes to use stickers and narrow down the options from there.

How your child uses stickers What the storage needs to do Possible approach
Moving stickers around or trading them Let stickers come off without damage, and make them easy to take in and out Use release sheets designed for sticker storage, and keep stickers for trading in a separate set
Looking at them and keeping them Avoid handling the stickers, and help them keep their shape Keep them on their original backing sheets
Taking them out and about Stay shut, and not be too bulky Set aside a small selection just for carrying

This table is a suggestion from the TamagoDaruma editorial team, based on different ways children use their stickers. We have not tested how well these approaches work with specific products.

If Your Child Moves Stickers Around or Trades Them

If stickers will be peeled off again and again, check not only whether they stay in place but also whether they can be removed without damage. It also helps to check the cautions on the packaging for any warnings about thin or soft stickers.

For more on setting ground rules for sticker trading with friends, a popular activity among elementary school children in Japan, see this article (in Japanese).

Have you noticed your child heading out to meet friends with a sticker book lately, or talking about how "this sticker has a high rate"?"Shiru-katsu"—collecting, sharing, and swapping stickers—is spreading among elementary-school children. It can look like nothing more than gathering cute stickers, but in practice the back-and-forth between kids ("which one should I trade?" "I don't want to give this one up" "how many will you swap for this?&q...

If You Keep Stickers on Their Original Backing Sheets

Keeping stickers on their original backing sheets avoids the risk of damaging them during removal. This approach suits favorites your child wants to look at rather than use.

If You Split Stickers into a Carry-Along Set and a Home Set

Carrying fewer stickers makes it easier to keep the book slim. While the book is being carried, check that the closure stays fastened. Separately, check that the stickers stay attached to the pages. If your child wants to take stickers to school, check your family’s rules and the school’s rules first.

Checklist Before You Buy or Stick

  • Identify the problem: a book that won’t close, stickers that fall off, or damage during removal.
  • Check the product name of your current release sheets and which side is intended for use.
  • Read any warnings about unsuitable sticker types.
  • Count the pages and check whether stickers are attached to one side or both.
  • Try a few stickers on new sheets before moving the whole collection.

Common Questions About Sticker Books and Puffy Stickers

Should stickers go on the front or the back of a release sheet?
Start by following the side indicated on the packaging. The sheet manufacturer’s page shares comments from buyers who found that puffy stickers held better on the back side. However, these are reports from buyers, not a recommendation from the manufacturer.
(Source: Sticker sheets made in Japan by an adhesive specialist (in Japanese) | NEION Film Coatings Corp.)
If the book won’t close anymore, should we buy a new binder?
Before replacing it, you can review how many pages are in it and how the stickers are placed. Dividing the collection between two books, or keeping stickers your child won’t use soon on their original backing sheets, may reduce the thickness.
Will other people’s reviews apply to my child’s stickers?
Not necessarily. Review results reflect the specific combination of sheets and stickers the reviewer used. Use them as a reference, then test a few of your own stickers first so that a poor match causes less damage.

Before buying more storage supplies, check which problem your child is having, along with the product name and the recommended side of your current release sheets. Then try any new method with a few stickers before using it for the whole collection.
